The Army Corps of Engineers is starting work to help barge traffic get through the Mississippi River even in drought conditions. Work began near downstate Thebes with crews removing rock pinnacles that can slow or even stop barges from passing. During last year’s drought conditions, many barges that are critical to agriculture and other local industries could not travel up and down the river. The work starts when the river is almost three-feet below normal again this week.
