Illinois Cited For Use Of Renewable Energy

The state of Illinois has been recognized as a top consumer of renewable energy.  Under a 2009 state law, Illinois cities and towns can buy their own electricity for residential and small business customers and 600 of them have done so, many with the requirement that a portion of the energy be from renewable sources.  Ninety-one communities are providing 100-percent of the energy their residents use from renewable sources.  The World Wildlife Fund's analysis of Illinois power consumption says that because of the use of renewable energy, pollution has been reduced by the equivalent of a million cars taken off the roads.
