Senator Kirk says as an Illinois Republican he feels compelled to support a gay rights bill in the U.S. Senate. Referencing former Senator Dirksen’s support of civil rights and President Lincoln abolishing slavery, Kirk spoke in favor of the Employment Non Discrimination Act. The act which protects LGBT rights at the workplace passed a procedural hurdle in the Senate. Yesterday’s speech marks the first time Senator Kirk has spoken from the podium since his 2012 stroke.
