Donald P. Carlat, 79, of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:12 A.M. Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at his home. Don was born November 5, 1933 in Lee’s Summit, Mo. the son of J. Claude and Nadine Y. (Yocum) Carlat. Don graduated from Lee’s Summit high school in 1951. He earned his BA degree in Latin from Kansas City Rockhurst College in 1955. Hi MS was earned in English from Central Mo State College in 1964. Don taught Latin and English at West Platte, High School in Weston, Mo from 1955-1958 and at Kewanee High School from 1958 to 1991.
Don married Jean Jacobsma on November 4, 1972 in Kewanee. She survives along with a sister-in-law Lorriane Carlat of Columbus, Ohio two nieces Carolyn and Michelle and a nephew Louis.
Don was preceded in death by his brother Louis and a sister and brother-in-law Marion and Peter Koia.
Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kewanee. He was member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council #734 since May of 1964 and had served as Grand Knight and District Deputy. He received his 4th degree in 1966 and served as Faithful Navigator from 1971-1973. Don was a life member of the National and Illinois Education Association since 1955. He was past president of the Illinois Classical Conference for Latin Teachers. Don sang in the former Kewanee Male Chorus for many years. Don and Jean were proud to have been foster parents to seventeen children over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 A.M. Wednesday from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kewanee. Fr.John Zumili will officiate.
Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M.
Tuesday, July 16th at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. where the rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. Memorials may be directed to Visitation School Foundation, St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Knights of Columbus.
