Raymond I. Borkgren

Raymond I. Borkgren, 89, of Geneseo passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at Hammond-Henry Hospital. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 5:00 pm on Friday at Vandemore Funeral Homes Ltd, Geneseo. Rev. Dr. David Esche will officiate and Military Honors will be accorded by Don Cherry VFW Post #5083. Visitation for Ray will be held from 3 -5 pm Friday prior to the memorial service. Private Inurnment will be held in the Oakwood cemetery. As per his wishes cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be left to First Presbyterian Church or Good Samaritan Village.

Raymond was born on March 6, 1924 in Geneseo, Il, the son of Swan R. and Alice (Henander) Borkgren. He Graduated from Geneseo High School in 1942. He was united in marriage to Janet E. Johnson on February 9, 1947 in Geneseo. He proudly served our county in the US Navy during WWII. Raymond enlisted March 2, 1943 and after boot training he joined squadron V.C. 85 at San Diego, CA. He shipped on the U.S.S. Lunga Point, an aircraft carrier, in October 1943. His ship was hit by a suicide plane in February, 1945 during the invasion of Iwo Jima, but was not put out of commission. He holds the American Theater ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with four battle stars, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with two battle stars, the Naval Commendation, a unit citation and the Victory medal. Raymond had been employed for over 30 years at the International Harvester Works as a General Manager retiring in 1981. He then became an electrical inspector for the City of Geneseo for 19 years, retiring in 2010.

Raymond was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. He also belonged to the Stewart Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion, and the Don Cherry VFW Post # 5083. Raymond loved spending time with his family. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed walking, woodworking, and working on the computer.

Survivors include his wife Janet; 2 sons: John (Dawn) Borkgren, Bartlett, IL, Steven (Kathy) Borkgren, Lancaster, PA; 1 daughter: Carol (Lon) Richey, Morrison, IL; 3 grandchildren: Sabrina Borkgren, Christine Richey, and John Richey.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
