Debra S. “Debbie” Spets, 52, of Kewanee, passed away at 10:15 PM, Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 27 at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. Visitation will be from 4-8, Friday, July 26 at the funeral home. Per her request, cremation has been accorded and her ashes will be scattered along the waterfronts of her favorite beaches. Memorials may be directed to the volleyball programs at Black Hawk East, Kewanee, Wethersfield and Galva schools. She was born December 7, 1960 in Kewanee, the daughter of Jackie L. and JoAnn L. Stuart Burnett. She married David J. “Dave” Spets on October 10, 1981 in Kewanee. He survives, as do two daughters, Jacquelin “Jackie” (Corey) Tavares and Jennifer Spets, all of Kewanee and a son, John David Spets, also of Kewanee, two sisters, Kathy (Norm) Mihm of Pittsburg, PA., and Tana Lee (Pete Cali) of Kewanee, a grandson, Theo Tavares and her father and mother-in-law, John and Bev Spets of Kewanee and several nieces and nephews. Debbie graduated from Galva High School in 1978. She had worked as a school secretary for 25 years beginning at Irving Elementary and then at Wethersfield Schools. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kewanee. She had been a volleyball coach at Kewanee Central School, Kewanee High School, Black Hawk East Community College and most recently at Galva High School.
