Herbert G. “Herb” Ufheil, 84, of Annawan passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in June in Bettendorf, IA. A funeral service celebrating his life will be 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 31 at the Vandemore Funeral Homes Ltd, Atkinson where Military Honors will follow accorded by Annawan VFW Post #7176. A Visitation for Herb will be from 4-7 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home in Atkinson. Memorials may be made to Abilities Plus or Annawan/Alba Fire Department. Per his request, Cremation Rites will be accorded following the services and a private inurnment will be held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Annawan.
Herb was born August 4, 1928, in Annawan, IL the son of William and Mary (Ioerger) Ufheil. He graduated from Annawan High School in 1946. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On October 15, 1955 he was united in Marriage to JoAnne M. Kaine in Kewanee, IL. JoAnne preceded him in death on June 9, 2012. He worked in the family business, William Ufheil & Sons Corn Shelling & Trucking for over 50 years. He along with the Ufheil family owned and operated the former Sauk Trail Inn in Annawan for many years. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in Rock Island and Moline from which he retired.
Herb was a member of the Annawan VFW Post # 7176 and had been a former member of the Annawan/Alba Fire Department for many years. He was also a former board member of Abilities Plus, Kewanee. Herbert loved family time at the pool and family get togethers. He loved reading history books, Chicago sporting teams, and enjoyed car shopping. He was also an accomplished popcorn maker.
He is survived by 2 sons: Eric (Lorraine) Ufheil, Annawan, IL, Edward (Kristy) Ufheil, Crystal Lake, IL; 4 daughters: Michelle Ufheil, Annawan, IL, Marisa (Jim) Gibbons, Tampa, FL, LoriAnne (Doug) Patton, Goodells, MI, Megan (Matt) Kintzger, Bettendorf, IA; 12 grandchildren: Seth, Erin, Kristen, Isabelle, Elena, Amanda, Erica, Liam, Brittany, Stephanie, Cassandra, Ava; 2 great grandchildren: Hayden and Hudson; 1 brother: Willis “Willie” Ufheil, Annawan, IL; 3 sisters: Dolores Bridges, Annawan, IL, Marilyn “Mick” Nowers, Bloomington, IL, Sharon Humphrey, Galva, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife JoAnne, son Kurt, daughter Erin Lynette, brothers Ken and Cal Ufheil, and sister Ruth Peart.
