Eugene F. “Gene” Schehl, 86, of Atkinson, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Hammond-Henry Hospital Long Term Care in Geneseo. A funeral service celebrating his life will be 10:30 am, Monday, August 12, 2013 at Atkinson Congregational Church. Rev. Mike McBride will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Geneseo. Visitation for Gene will be held from 3-5 pm on Sunday at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd, Atkinson. Memorials may be made to Eugene Schehl Memorial Fund.
Gene was born December 19, 1926 in Prophetstown, IL, the son of Fred and Alma (Hoogerwerf) Schehl. He graduated from Atkinson High School in 1944. He was united in marriage to L. Laureen Hamilton on May 28, 1949 in Geneseo, IL. She preceded him in death in 2010. Gene worked for Farm Service Co. in Atkinson as Branch Manager for several years and then later he worked at Wyffels Hybrids in Atkinson in Quality Control Division.
He served as Mayor of Atkinson from 1965 to 1973 and is a former member and past president of Atkinson Kiwanis Club, having served as president during the club’s third year of existence. He was a former member of Full Gospel Businessmen and Henry County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and vegetable gardening.
Gene is survived by his son: Steve (Norma) Schehl, Carmel, IN; 4 grandchildren: Amy(Todd) Cochran, Waukesha, WI, Sarah (Matt) Mumm, Sugar Grove, IL, Elyse (James) Rich, Tokyo, Japan, Tyler (Joan) Schehl, Chicago, IL; 4 great grandchildren: Emilie, Cole, Aden, Matilyn; 2 sisters: Phyllis Bass, Cornelius, OR, Marie Allen, Chicago, IL.
He was preceded in death by parents, his wife Laureen, and daughter Jan Claeys.
