Marie S. Lodge, 92, of Geneseo, passed away Monday, August 26, 2013 at Good Samaritan Village in Geneseo. A funeral service celebrating Marie’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Vandemore Funeral Home in Geneseo. Rev. Bruce Bergthold will officiate. Burial will follow in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation for Marie will be 9:30-10:30 (1 hour prior to the service) at the funeral home on Thursday. Memorials may be left to the G.E.E.E. (Geneseo Excellence in Education Endowment).
Marie was born January 3, 1921 in Quincy Massachusetts, the daughter of Theodore and Maude (Richardson) Smith. Through a scholarship, she was a proud graduate of Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA where she was raised. She went on to earn her nurses degree from Massachusetts’ General in Boston. Marie’s entire career was one of nursing, which she very much enjoyed; first at Massachusetts General Hospital, then in the Army, then onto Proctor Hospital in Peoria and finally at Moline Public hospital from which she retired as head nurse.
In May 1947 Marie married Darold Lodge (deceased Nov. 1991). They spent their married life living on his family farm near Geneseo, IL. Marie’s greatest joy was flying with her husband in their private plane. They also enjoyed traveling but there was never enough time for all the traveling they would have liked to do.
Marie was a member of First Congregational Church in Geneseo and the Mission Committee of the Church, the Geneseo Historical Association, the henry County Home Extension, the Moline Public Retiree’s, the Hammond Henry Hospital Auxiliary, and was a former member of the Lorraine Church for 44 ½ years.
Survivors include her brother: Richard (Noreen) Smith of Harrison, Maine; 1 niece, 4 nephews, 10 great-nieces and nephews; 8 great-great nieces and nephews,
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and 1 sister: Gelnna Barrett.
