Tony Lazar, 81, lifelong Kewanee resident, passed away at 6:49 P.M. Wednesday, October 2, 2013 surrounded by his family at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.
Tony was born July 2, 1932, one of 11children of Martha (Ptasnik) and Ignatz Lazar. He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1950 where he excelled in sports. He later attended the University of Illinois. He loved sports which he continued thoughout his life. He won many awards playing golf, horseshoes and handball. He was the catcher for Ceil and Oscar's baseball team in the 60s. He loved the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and listening to the Kewanee High School football games on the radio. As sick as he was he was clapping on Saturday morning when he found out Kewanee beat Princeton and reclaimed the trophy.
He proudly served our country in the Korean War joining after his brother Johnny got killed in action. Tony worked construction and spent many years as a brick mason tender with Les Vigor and Sons Construction Company. He was a member of Laborers Local 852 and was president of the local for many years. It was quite a sight to see Tony throwing the wet cement and bricks to his brother Don up in the scaffolding to be ready for the brick layers.
Tony married Barbara Wood Dillon in Febraury 3, 1967 in Kewanee, Il. Until just a few years ago they resided in the family home where he was born. He is survived by his wife, Barb, his children, Lauri (Dan) Juarez, Dubuque, Iowa, Leslie Lazar (Brent Hagen) Cambridge, Lisa Lazar (Bill Rivord), Kewanee, Vikki Dillon Steltenpohl (Gerald), Kewanee and Tom Dillon (Keiko) Tokyo, Japan. His grandchildren, Pam Baumgardner, Colona, Il., Jeff Steltenpohl (Kristen) Forest Grove, Oregon, Mike Dillon, Hollywood, CA, Jay Dillon, Tokyo, Japan and Mason and Cole Piggott of Cambridge along with 5 great grandchildren, Grant, Sylvia and Ethan Baumgardner and Jake and Khloe Steltenpohl.. Also surviving are his brothers, Don Lazar, Kewanee and Philip (Lynn) Lazar, Needville, TX and many nieces and nephews, all who he loved and was so proud of.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Anne Fulton, Sophie Van Pratt, and Leona Rositis Lazar. His brothers, John, Alex, Charles (Shorty), William, and Adam.
Services will be held Monday, October 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home. Father Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services at the funeral home on Monday. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be made to the local VFW.
