Sandra Kay Cahalan, 68, of Geneseo passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013 at her residence. A Memorial Mass celebrating her life will be held 10:30 Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Geneseo. Rev. Michael Pakula will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation for Sandra will be held 4-7 PM Monday, October 7th at Vandemore Funeral Home in Geneseo. Per her request, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be left to the Sandra Cahalan Memorial Fund.
Sandra was born May 10, 1945 in Moline, IL, the daughter of Raymond and Alberta (Deshemaker) VandeVelde. She was a 1963 graduate of Alleman High School in Rock Island. She was united in marriage to John M. Cahalan on July 27, 1963 in Moline. Sandra was a hostess at the Cellar Restaurant in Geneseo for 32 years, retiring in 2010 due to her health.
Sandra was a member and past president of the Geneseo and Colona Junior Women’s Club and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in Geneseo. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Little League Score keeper for her boys’ teams for 13 years. She enjoyed crocheting and made blankets and hats to take to the hospital for newborns for many years.
Survivors include her husband: John; 3 sons: Gregg (Amy) Cahalan of Grand Haven, MI, Todd Cahalan and Kris Bankson of Bettendorf, IA, and Mark (Laurie) Cahalan of DeWitt, IA; 15 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 1 Brother: Ron (Jeanine) VandeVelde of Lake Barrington, IL .
