Gerald B. “Jay” Cowells, 85, of Bettendorf, IA passed away Wednesday December 18, 2013 at Unity Point-Trinity in Bettendorf. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday December 23rd at Vandemore Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Atkinson, IL. Inurnment will be at Liberty Cemetery in rural Atkinson, IL. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior (10-11 am) to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Gerald Cowells Memorial Fund.
Jay was born on April 5, 1928 in Kewanee, IL, the son of Frank and Sadie (VanDeVoorde) Cowells. He was a graduate of Atkinson High School and later served in the US Army. He was united in marriage to Dorothy H. Holmquist on April 7, 1951 in Rock Island, IL. Jay worked as an Inspector and in Quality Assurance for John Deere Plow Planter Works for 32 years, from which he retired.
Jay was very generous, with volunteering his time to help sick family members and friends. He never knew a stranger and was friendly to all. He loved antiquing, woodworking, and going to the casinos. He also enjoyed coaching the 10 year old’s baseball team in Bettendorf for many years.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy; his daughter Jaylene (Dan) Peterson, Bettendorf, IA; granddaughter Monica Adams, Milwaukee, WI; step-grandson Orry (Chantelle) Peterson, Edgington, IL; great grandchildren: Cali and Barrett; a sister, Joyce (Vern) Minnaert, Atkinson, IL; numerous loved nieces and nephews; and a dear friend to Jay and Dorothy: Joann Crow, Rock Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Roy B. Cowells.
