Elmer L. Lawson, 91, of Geneseo, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, IA. A funeral service celebrating Elmer’s life will be held 10:30 AM Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Church of Christ in Geneseo, IL. Ollie Adams will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, IL, where Military Honors will be accorded by the Don Cherry Military Post #5083. Visitation for Elmer will be 4-7 PM Thursday, January 9th at Vandemore Funeral Home in Geneseo. Memorials may be left to the Church of Christ.
Elmer was born on June 10, 1922 in Bentree, West Virginia, the son of James and Frances (McClellan) Lawson. He was united to Dona M “Mickey” Mizner on December 15, 1945 in Marston, IL. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Coast Guard during WWII. Elmer farmed in Henry County. He also worked for the J.L. Brady Company for 17 years as a heavy equipment operator and was the owner/operator of Quad L. Construction Company.
Elmer belonged to the Church of Christ in Geneseo, the Geneseo Moose Lodge #990, and the American Legion Post. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife: Dona “Mickey”; sons: Charles (Connie) Lawson of Atkinson, Darrell (Jeanne) Lawson of Hillsdale, IL, and Michael Lawson of Goofy Ridge, IL; daughter: Dona “Kitty” (James) Cross of Atkinson; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brothers: James Edward Lawson of Milan, IL; and sisters: Sally Godshall of Arkansas and Beulah Sloan of Andover, IL.
