Edelstein - Norman W. Koehler, 73, of Edelstein, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at 9:22 a.m., Jan. 22, 2014, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born on May 7, 1940 in Lawn Ridge to Herman and Elizabeth (Mangold) Koehler. Norman is survived by the love of his life, Mary Ann Cluskey, whom he married on Dec. 3, 1961 at Blue Ridge United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are his four children, Denise (David) Austin of Edelstein, Rhonda Urazoff of Chillicothe, Karl (Jennifer) Koehler of Sparland and Anthony (Beth) Koehler of Dunlap; 12 grandchildren, Kristina, Adrianna, Grayson, Phillip, Ethan, Elizabeth, Elias, Evan, Clayton, Clint, Kai and Kenna; two sisters, Connie (Hugo) DeAndrea of Long Grove and Bonnie (Wally) Geyer of Tremont.
Norman attended Lawn Ridge Grade School and graduated from Princeville High School in 1958. He farmed all his life in the Edelstein area with his father and later his sons.
He raised hogs, cattle, chickens, turkeys and the occasional duck and always had room for a rider in his tractor or combine.
For many years he was a member of Blue Ridge Methodist Church and for the last 30 years he was a member of Princeville United Methodist Church. He served as a LaPrairie Township Trustee. In 2005, he was the recipient of the Conservation Farm Family of the Year award for Marshall and Putnam counties. He also served on the Blue Ridge Cemetery Board.
Lately, he enjoyed tending to his garden, playing cards and attending his potluck group. Basketball was his favorite sport, especially when his grandchildren were playing. He never wanted to miss a game. His unique sense of humor always brought laughter to his home, as did his traditional homemade ice cream on Christmas.
Norman’s love for farming was second only to his love for family, which has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. He will be in our hearts forever.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Princeville United Methodist Church. Rev. Rex Hendrix will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2014, at Princeville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, rural Edelstein.
Memorial contributions may be made to Princeville United Methodist Church or Blue Ridge Cemetery.
