Chief Petty Officer Norman David Carl Neuleib U.S.N, 80, of Geneseo passed away Friday, January 24, 2014 at Heartland Heath Care Center in Moline. A funeral service celebrating Norman’s life will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. Rev. Stephen Mueller will officiate. Burial will follow in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL where military honors will be accorded by the Don Cherry VFW Post 5083. Visitation for Norman will be held 5-7 PM Tuesday, January 28th at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Disabled Veteran’s Association or Concordia Lutheran Church, Geneseo.
Norman was born September 12, 1933 in Geneseo, IL the son of Fredrick and Martha (Bannas) Neuleib. He was a 1951 graduate of Geneseo High School. He was married to Irene Thompson and she preceded him in death. He later married Brenda Woodworth and she also preceded him in death as well. Norman proudly served his country as a career United States Navy Chief Petty Officer for 23 years, serving from 1951-1974. He served on numerous ships, earning multiple medals and accommodations.
Norman belonged to Concordia Lutheran Church. He was a life member of the VFW Don Cherry Post 5083 and was its past Commander. He was a devoted and active member of the NRA and also belonged to the Colona America Legion and the Veteran’s Acceptance Committee (VAC) of Henry County. Norman was very active with his Navy Reunions. He enjoyed tinkering with his guns, traveling, was a die-hard Cubs fan and a very handy man. He enjoyed walks around town and loved his pets. Norman loved his family and friends and was very generous to all of them.
Survivors include his sister: Zereta Hamilton of Geneseo; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; and special friends: Deb and Rose.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Dean, Marv, and Loren “Bud” Neuleib, and 2 infant siblings.
