KEWANEE - Helen Grace Freberg, 93, of Kewanee, passed away at 5:45 AM, Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Kewanee Care Home. She was born January 7, 1921 in Burns Township, the daughter of Walter and Anna (Manthe) Richter. She attended Cosner and Moon Schools and graduated from Annawan High School with the class of 1938 and then attended Kewanee Business College. She was the bookkeeper at City Furniture and Rug Company prior to her marriage to Charles Freberg on April 25, 1943. They farmed in the Cambridge, Kewanee and Bishop Hill areas until Mr. Freberg’s death on December 11, 1983. Helen was an office clerk at Kewanee Hospital for 23 years until her retirement in 1988.
She was a member of St Peter’s Evangelical United Church of Christ, its Women’s Guild and had served on the Church Council. She had been active in Kewanee Hospital Auxiliary, having served as secretary and was the treasurer for the Alcove Gift Shop for many years. She was also a member of Hospital Retirees, Kewanee Senior Citizens, the South Side Club and a card club. She enjoyed her family and liked to bake for bake sales and special occasions.
Survivors include a son, Kenton (Barbara) Freberg of Crookston, MN; a daughter, Anne (Allen) Cutts of Decatur, GA; seven grandchildren; Scott (Maureen) Freberg of St. Paul, MN; Kari (Jason) Elseth of Willmar, MN; Angela Freberg of Rock Island, IL; Amy Freberg, New Windsor, IL; Chad (Caroline) Freberg, Big Island, IL; Amanda Freberg, Fort Madison, IA; and Sarah Cutts of Decatur, GA; twelve great grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Elliott of Kewanee and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Richter of Kewanee. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son, Arden and his wife, Doreen, a grandson, Brandon Freberg, 2 sisters, Florence Kipp and Berniece Martin, 3 brothers, Elmer, Leslie and Dale, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lauren and Leona Freberg.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 21 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church UCC in Kewanee. Rev. Bob Sherman will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery in Cambridge. Memorials may be made to her church, OSF Saint Luke Medical
