John F. Mortonson

John F. Mortonson, 80 of Geneseo, Il passed away August 17, 2014 at Good Samaritan Society, Geneseo Village. Funeral services for John will be held 10:30 Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Vandemore Funeral Home in Geneseo. Rev. Dr. Chris Ritter will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Don Cherry VFW Post #5083. Visitation for John will be held 4-7 PM Wednesday, August 20th at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. Memorials may be left to John Mortonson Memorial Fund.

John was born October 9, 1933 in Geneseo the son of Howard and Mose Mortonson. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1952 and then served in the United States Army for 2 years. He married Sidney May Scott on September 23, 1956 in Bowen, Il and they celebrated their 57th anniversary last year. John graduated from

AIC in Davenport, IA and began working as bookkeeper for Midway Oil Company in Rock Island for 29 years, from which he retired in 1994. He was a Geneseo Firefighter for 27 years, a 4H leader for 37 years and a multi-gallon blood donor for the American Red Cross. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Geneseo. In later years he worked for the Geneseo Communications Telephone Company, retiring in 2011.

Survivors include his wife, three children: Debra Mortonson of Sterling, Il; Steve (Shellie) Mortonson of Rock Falls, Il; and Diane Rodgers of Danville, NH; 7 grandchildren Todd Mortonson, Tanner Mortonson, , Ashley Atwell, Andrea Rodgers, Bobbie Blumhoff, Mitchell(Stacey) Hummel, Randee(Brandon) Johnson; 3 great-grandchildren, Hanna Blumhoff, Isabelle Blumhoff and Cohen Johnson; and one sister: Janice(Charles) Calhoun of Geneseo.

He was preceded in death by both his parents.
