William H. "Red" DeSpain

William H. “Red” DeSpain, 81, of Geneseo- On the morning of Monday, August 25, 2014, a wonderfully loving and gentle heart stopped beating at Hammond Henry Hospital, Geneseo. Red passed away surrounded by those he loved. A celebration of life service for Red will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Geneseo Evangelical Free Church. Rev. Greg Chenoweth and Rev. Stephen Palm will officiate. Visitation for Red will be 5-7 PM Friday, August 29th at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo, where Military Honors will be accorded by the Don Cherry VFW Post # 5083. Per his request, Cremation Rites will be accorded following the visitation. Memorials may be left to the William H. “Red” DeSpain Memorial Fund.

Red was a devoted grandfather who loved spending time playing and laughing with his grandchildren and his dogs, Dusty and Ruffles. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed the outdoors. His woodworking talents were a great source of pleasure for him. During baseball season, he could often be found cheering on his favorite team – the Chicago Cubs. Red spent four years serving in the army and 30 years working for John Deere Harvester. Although his hands were rough, he was a gentle soul who loved without restraint.

Red was born November 12, 1932 in Moline, IL, the son of Arthur and Susie DeSpain. Red married Colleen Sue Halligan on January 14, 1956 in Hillsdale, IL. Red attended the Geneseo Evangelical Free Church.

Red is survived by his wife Colleen; sons: Tim (Cheryl) DeSpain and Steven (Jackie) DeSpain of Geneseo; daughter: Lorrie DeSpain Young, also of Geneseo; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Red was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and a granddaughter.
