The Phillies put up five runs in the first and made it stand for a 7-2 victory over theCardinals in a rain-shortened seven-inning affair in Philadelphia. Humberto Quintero was 2-for-3 with two RBI while John Mayberry Jr. and Ben Revere each had two hits and drove in a run. Roy Halladay pitched all seven frames, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six to improve to 2-and-2. The Phils ended a four-game slide with the win. Jaime Garcia allowed eight runs, four of which were earned, over three innings to suffer the loss. Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday each belted solo homers for St. Louis, which has dropped three out of five.
Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer in the first inning and the Brewers went on to a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. Jonathan Lucroy added an RBI triple while Carlos Gomez blasted a solo home run for Milwaukee. Marco Estrada tossed six innings of three-run ball to improve to 2-and-0 while Jim Henderson locked down his third save. The Brewers have won five in-a-row. David DeJesus hit a two-run blast for Chicago while Luis Valbuena and Anthony Rizzo added solo shots in have lost four out of five. Jeff Samardzija gave up five runs over seven frames for the loss.
Last night's game between the Twins and White Sox in Chicago was postponed. The game was called off because of freezing temperatures in the Chicago area. No makeup date has been announced.
